Special Needs

Individuals with special needs typically have low fitness levels despite evidence indicating that physiological gains can be achieved from physical activity and exercise interventions.

Low fitness levels result from sedentary lifestyles, social and recreational opportunities, low motivation to be physically active and difficulty finding experienced tutors.

Any exercise programme for someone with special exercise needs should include the following basic exercise principles:

  • Exercise frequency – how often does the individual want to exercise? Are their any health risks with too little or too much exercise?
  • Exercise duration – how long is the individual able to engage in exercise?
  • Exercise specificity – well developed exercise programs include elements that focus on aerobic, strength, balance and flexibility components.
  • Exercise intensity – How hard can the individual work? This is unique to the skills, motivation, and challenges of the individual
  • Exercise progression – As the individual improves their fitness and achieve their goals, the program will almost certainly need to adjust goals so as to maintain the degree of challenge.
